All good days are gone, and you did not show love
for God.
What will you do by regretting now when the birds
have eaten up the grain of the farm? ~Kabir~
Reflection on Neglected Devotion
Kabir laments
the loss of better times, pointing out that opportunities for spiritual
connection have passed. He observes, "All good days are gone, and you did
not show love for God." This highlights a sense of regret for not having
cultivated devotion when circumstances were favourable.
He continues with a vivid metaphor:
"What will you do by regretting now when the birds have eaten up the grain of the farm?"
Here, Kabir emphasizes the futility of remorse after the chance for spiritual growth has already been lost.
Just as
a farmer cannot recover grain once birds have consumed it, one cannot reclaim
missed opportunities for devotion.
Through these
words, Kabir urges his listeners to recognize the importance of engaging with
the divine without delay, rather than postponing spiritual pursuits until it is
too late.
