When a drop merges into the ocean, everyone
understands it.
But when the ocean merges into the drop, seldom
does one understand it.~Kabir~
The Subtle Mystery of Divine Union
Kabir offers a profound insight into the nature of spiritual realization through an evocative metaphor:
“When a drop merges into the ocean, everyone understands it. But when the ocean merges into the drop, seldom does one understand it.”
This statement
captures the dual aspects of the journey toward the Divine.
The merging of the drop into the ocean is a widely recognized symbol for the dissolution of the individual self into the infinite Divine presence.
In this process, the
seeker loses their separate identity, becoming indistinguishable within the
vastness of the Divine, just as a drop loses itself in the ocean.
However, Kabir’s teaching goes further, pointing to a deeper, less comprehended mystery: the ocean merging into the drop.
Here, the boundless Divine presence fills the heart of the awakened seeker.
After the loss of self, the infinite does not
remain distant or abstract; instead, it pours itself into the finite vessel of
the individual, transforming and illuminating it from within.
This subtle shift reveals the dynamic interplay at the heart of spiritual awakening: not only does the seeker vanish into the Divine, but the Divine also makes itself present within the seeker.
This union enables the awakened one to embody divine
qualities and radiate love, wisdom, and humility into the world.
This rare comprehension, as Kabir alludes, is not achieved through intellectual effort alone but through a gradual dispelling of ignorance by the Guru’s wisdom, much like darkness yields to the first rays of dawn; it is a living transformation where the ego and greed, which erode both clarity and devotion, must be relinquished if the heart is to truly become a vessel for the Divine.
In this ongoing process, the Guru acts as a purifier—guiding, challenging, and refining the seeker—so that divine qualities may shine forth unimpeded, and the realised soul, though apparently finite, becomes a luminous channel for the infinite, humbly serving as a bearer of the Divine’s wisdom and love in the world.
