The Divine Fire Within the Heart

God is like fire dwelling in each and every heart.

But because the flint stone does not produce a spark in the heart, it does not give light.~Kabir~

The Divine Fire Within the Heart

This symbol of the divine spark hidden within each soul speaks to the necessity of personal effort and spiritual yearning.

Kabir’s teachings urge the seeker to move beyond passive belief, engaging in genuine self-inquiry and reflection to kindle the latent spiritual fire. Only through such intentional awakening does the heart truly become a vessel for the Divine light, radiating wisdom, compassion, and clarity to the world.

Kabir uses the metaphor of fire to illustrate the presence of the Divine in every human heart.

He explains that, just as fire exists within a flint stone, God resides in all hearts.

However, unless the flint is struck—unless there is inner awakening or sincere spiritual effort—the hidden fire does not reveal its light.

In the same way, the Divine qualities within us remain concealed until they are awakened by genuine search and self-realization.

Kabir’s imagery emphasizes that the heart must be stirred, much like striking a flint to produce a spark, in order for God’s light to become manifest.

Without this inner awakening, the Divine presence stays dormant, and its illumination is not experienced.

This metaphor encourages seekers to look inward and actively pursue spiritual growth, so that the light of the Divine may shine forth from within.

In this transformative process, Kabir reminds us that the journey is not merely about finding the Divine as something separate or distant, but about dissolving the boundaries of the self until there is no longer a distinction between seeker and sought.

When the heart is truly awakened, it becomes possible to lose oneself entirely in that presence—just as a drop loses itself in the ocean, its identity merging with the vastness beyond comprehension.

This union is not an end, but the beginning of a deeper realisation: the Divine not only pervades the world, but also fills the awakened heart, allowing the qualities of love, wisdom, and humility to flow outward, transforming both the individual and all with whom they come into contact.
